IN 2022, I WILL ROW ACROSS THE ATLANTIC OCEAN.

SOLO.

More people have been to space or climbed Everest than have rowed across the Atlantic.

There has never been a Black African or other African POC to row the Atlantic, solo.

Until now.

“There is a staggering lack of diversity and representation in the outdoor and adventure industries in both South Africa and Internationally. I’ve read that book, I’ve seen that movie. I don’t see myself represented equally, so where there is no representation, I choose to be it. I want a challenge and adventure great enough to leverage the discussion. I don’t need anyones permission, I’m out to make history.”

Who is Ryan?

Ryan has steadily been working on his adventure experience for more than a decade. He has been to war as a photojournalist covering conflict in both Libya and Syria, among many other stories. He is a climber and dirtbag, having climbed El Capitan in Yosemite. He has sailed the Atlantic Ocean, traversed continents and ranges, been to nearly 50 countries and now, wants more. His resumé reads like those of people he admired growing up. If they can do it, so can he.

There was never a Plan B for adventure.

Born and raised in Cape Town, South Africa by a hard-working single parent Ryan was always encouraged to give his best, follow his dreams and go for it. Ryan likes to believe that his Grandfather taught him how to dream, and that his Mother and Grandmother taught him to make those dreams come true.

Ryan has been driven from childhood to live his wildest dreams. Now, his ambition and that voice calls for more: to do more and to be extraordinary.

It has not been easy having to deal with prejudice, battling depression, anxiety and PTSD, as well the loss of his Grandfather whose life and death played a major role in the decisions Ryan has made.

Yet still, we Dala what We Must.

Ryan has achieved every goal he has set himself. Undaunted, he wants to see and know just how far he can go and at the same time change the narrative of diversity and representation in adventure and exploration.

The Journey .

Ryan intends to depart Cape Town in November/December of 2022. From Cape Town he will set out across the Atlantic Ocean to the Caribbean, roughly 5300 Nautical Miles (NM) away. In doing so, Ryan plans to break the World Record for the furthest distance rowed Across The Atlantic which currently sits at 5030NM.
